Level 1
Core:
Students in Level 1 use the very first book in the Interchange learning series: Interchange Intro. The class focuses on one unit every 1.5 weeks using the Student Book and companion Workbook. Basic vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading, speaking, and listening exercises are taught by the teacher. This class is set up to prepare each student for success in learning the English language throughout their studies at CLI. Therefore, the Intro class incorporates a variety of outside learning materials to further develop concepts that are only briefly mentioned in the book. Once basic fundamentals of the English language are developed, the student will advance to the next level.
- Elective 1: Survival English:
Elective 2: Reading & Writing:
This class uses many outside resources supplied by the teacher, and occasionally reading and writing activities from the Interchange series. Every student will receive a writing journal and each week will consist of learning a grammar point in preparation to using that grammar point within a sentence. Thus, to facilitate sentence formation the students will spend a day doing a related reading exercise highlighting the grammar they previously learned. The week is organized to have each exercise build off of one another so that the students can fully comprehend how to use grammar appropriately in their writings. A writing topic that corresponds with subjects that have been discussed in class will be given to the students. This topic will be used in their writings. The goal in the writing class is to get each student to become experts in the following:
- Brainstorm about a topic
- Pick ideas and create sentences
- Organize the sentences
- Create a final draft
